Page 6

Sunday Dec. 23, 2012 (late morning):

Stephen is poor and his mother is dead. He and Buck (who is still not done shaving and who has an aunt who blames Stephen for the desth of Mrs. Daedalus) watch a boat over the parapet. Buck has lent/will lend some clothes to Stephen whom he calls "poor dogsbody!"

I go back and read the bottom of the last page to follow what was happening. Did Stephen's mother die in Artist? I don't like Buck - I get the character type who makes tons of allusions and wishes he could teach everyone Greek, but I decidedly do not like him. He goes too far to be charmingly eccentric. I look up "hyperborean" and I think Buck is saying, "I'm as cold as you, but even I would kneel down if my dying mother asked me to." Maybe he's just pretending to be annoying. I start re-reading A Portrait of the Artist (last time was more than 15 years ago).
