Thursday December 27, 2012 (morning):

Buck brushes it off and advises Stephen not to "mope over it all day" then goes in. Stephen thinks back on his dying mother.

I need to get a bookmark - it doesn't really work when you dog ear every page. This page is the most stream of consciousness yet. A cored apple filled with brown sugar, an invisible boy, etc. it's very effective in this case.

Tuesday December 31, 2012 (morning):

The milk lady comes and talks to them. Buck is a medical student. She is a symbol of Ireland, but she can't speak Irish. Haines thinks everyone in Ireland should speak Irish. "Sure we ought to," is her reply.Haines is from England.

A new year and I already messed up and skipped a page. Sorry. So today we have two pages. I could tell the milk lady was a symbol of something, but I already know from Sparknotes that it is Ireland AND that Buck is a medical student AND that Haines is English. Oh well.

Sunday December 30, 2012 (morning):

Buck makes "strong tea" according to Haines. The three eat; Buck teases Haines apparently about his interest in Irish folk. The milk arrives.

Buck is being annoying again. Does he carry on like this forever? Wait, this is The Odyssey, right? So if Stephen is Telemachus, is Buck Mentor? I read some of the summary and analysis on Sparknotes for the section I have read so far.

Saturday December 29, 2012 (late afternoon):

Buck, Stephen, and Haines sit down to breakfast. Buck is "in a sudden pet" because the lady who brings the milk for the tea is late, but Haines sees her coming.

I go to the Sparknotes character list to look up Haines - is he the one who dreams of killing panthers? It says he is a student staying at the Martello tower where Stephen and Buck (real name Malachi) live.

Friday Dec. 28, 2012 (early evening):

Stephen finishes thinking about his mother, who was out of her mind when she died. Today he gets paid, and offers to give some money to Buck so they can "have a merry time, Drinking whiskey, beer and wine," sings Buck, off to have breakfast.

Stephen mentions Clongowes, which is a school he went to in artist. When does Bloom show up?

Wednesday Dec. 26, 2012 (morning):

Stephen tells Buck that he was offended by the flippant way Buck spoke after The death of Mrs. Daedalus, calling her "beastly dead." As a medical student(?) this is how Buck chooses to see death.

Ah! Another day that ends in a cliff hanger! Buck turns to say something to Stephen and that's the end of the page! I re-read the last few lines of the last page and I quite like Buck now! He's a softy, it's all just pretend bravado with him. :)

Tuesday Dec. 25, 2012 (morning):

Buck wants to know what Stephen is upset about, but it's not the man with the dreams. So what is it? "Do you remember the first day I went to your house after my mother's death?" Stephen asks.

Today is the first day I am really tempted to read ahead - what IS wrong with Stephen? What DID happen that day? I guess I'll have to wait. I'm already to part/chapter three of Artist and young Stephen is wallowing in sin, becoming hardened to the world?
